The Adventure Begins

Thursday 24th November

As a supporter of twenty one year old Bryony Balen’s British Antarctic Record attempt, Butler & Willow will be tracking Bryony’s adventure every step of the way.

After arriving in Punta Arenas earlier this week, Bryony and the team have been busy running through the final preparations for the expedition.

One of the biggest logistical challenges for Bryony has been food. Apart from the initial challenge of consuming over 5000 calories a day, the team has to work out how to transport all of the food, along with equipment, to where it is needed. To prevent the need to pull all of the supplies from the start point in at the Hercules Inlet, the team is having a number of re-supplies. The majority of clothing, electronics, tents, and equipment will be pulled in ‘pulks’ from the start, which will include the first 3 weeks supply of food. After these first three weeks, the team will be re-supplied via an air-drop, with a final re-supply 2 weeks after that.

When it comes down to it, what do you feel like most after a day of hard Antarctic skiing at -25°C? Most likely a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich! The team's answer to this is a little different. Bryony and the team have cooked over 40Kg of bacon, and other ingredients to make a highly nutritional and fatty block which will freeze when the expedition begins. All that is needed is to cut some of the block and use it as a base for hot meals; something welcome to any Antarctic explorer after a hard days hike.

In all, the pulks will weigh around 50-60kg each (getting lighter as the supplies are used), with plenty of the room for the 11Kg of snacks (chocolate raisins, Turkish Delight and cereal bars). Each team member will pull two pulks for the duration of the expedition.

Butler & Willow would like to wish Bryony and the team the best of luck as they prepare to depart, and await the next update.
