Monday 9th January
In just under two weeks, Bryony Balen will become the youngest Britain to ski to the South Pole from the Hercules Inlet. On completion Bryony will have covered a total of 1200km, and an incline of 3000m.
This is an incredible achievement which has been made even more inspiring by the conditions and challenges that Bryony and her team have had to endure.
Normally it takes 60 days for teams to reach the South Pole when departing from the Hercules Inlet. Bryony and her team have so far been skiing for 43 days, and with only 315km remaining they are expecting to reach their destination in 9-10 days, an amazing feat.
Throughout the expedition the team have endured illness, the loss of a team member and challenging weather conditions. They were even dropped off 10km from their start point! Despite the many challenges that have been faced, the team have never given up and have demonstrated a huge determination to succeed.
However the team still faces a difficult week ahead. After hitting the resupply tomorrow the team then face a final incline of 700m before enjoying a downhill ski of 100m to reach the pole. But with full pulks, the last leg of the journey won't be easy!
As a supporter of twenty one year old Bryony Balen’s British Antarctic Record attempt, Butler & Willow will continue to track Bryony’s adventure every step of the way.
